A commissioned table lamp handcrafted from cherry and reclaimed walnut. The Lamp was carved by hand to catch light and shadow throughout the day, while the reclaimed walnut shade has small openings that cast shifting patterns when the lamp is illuminated.

Project Overview
This one-of-one table lamp was designed as both a functional source of light and a sculptural object. The piece combines a hand-carved cherry base with a reclaimed walnut shade, bringing together two woods with distinct colors, grain patterns, and histories.
Material and Process
The cherry base was shaped and carved by hand, creating a textured surface that responds differently as natural light moves across it. Rather than hiding the marks of the process, the carving was used to give the lamp a tactile, irregular character and emphasize the warmth of the wood.
Reclaimed Walnut Shade
The shade was made from reclaimed walnut and pierced with a series of small openings. When the lamp is turned on, light passes through these openings and creates shifting points and patterns across the surrounding surfaces. The effect changes depending on the angle, distance, and atmosphere of the room.
Design Approach
The lamp was developed through a material-led process rather than a completely fixed form. The grain, color, and natural variation of each piece of wood helped determine the final shape. Because each lamp is made individually, small differences in carving, proportion, and surface become part of its final character.
Final Result
The finished lamp changes throughout the day. In natural light, the carved cherry surface emphasizes texture, depth, and shadow. When illuminated, the pierced walnut shade transforms the piece, directing light outward and creating a softer, more atmospheric presence in the room.
